About the 350 (or 380, or whatever) tons of explosives . . .
Apparently, they've been missing since April 10, 2003. That, for those of us keeping score, was ONE DAY after we rode into the center of Baghdad and the jubilant people took down the Big Bad Dictator statue.
On Monday night, NBC reported that its embedded crew said U.S. troops did discover significant stockpiles of bombs, but no sign of the missing HMX and RDX explosives.
To me, this changes things. If looters (read: terrorists) went in over the course of a couple of days before we could get our troops into Al-Qaqaa, at the very start of the invasion, that's a lot different than leaving the whole thing unguarded for the 18 months between then and now.
The sin of omission is not so glaring.
It also says to me that the insurgents (again, read: terrorists) were planning to go after the good stuff all along - and had a small window of opportunity to do it. If you were to rob a jewelry store, and you knew the cops were coming, you'd pass up the gold charms and go straight for the diamonds, wouldn't you?
We've made a lot of mistakes over there, and completely underestimated the evil of the people we're fighting against. But in this case, I'm willing to cut our guys a little slack.
